New telly

We have two televisions. One in the sitting room; 6 years old, still a pretty decent picture and ok sound. And one in the bedroom; really old. The remote hardly works, some channels cannot be received anymore, picture quality is not very good. Really, an old television, running on its last legs. Although - and that's the main reason we've not discard it yet - watching DVDs is more or less ok with an acceptable picture quality.

A few months ago we decided on kicking out the bedroom telly and replacing it with a new lcd widescreen one. But not yet, we'd do that when we'd move.

Friday evening (!) Nina came up with this new idea: The sitting room telly furniture is one of those Ikea TV bench things with wheels. As we're looking for a single-floor apartment, why don't we just roll the telly to wherever we want it? Brilliant! So kick out the bedroom telly, keep the sitting room telly and no need (or better: want) to buy a quite expensive new widescreen lcd telly. Fits perfectly well in our desired lifestyle: spend less, save more.

Sunday morning. I've just poured my first coffee of the day and flung myself into the couch to watch the morning news. Nothing. The telly broke down. Of course that one had to break down. Not the really old one, no the 'good' one. And of course now, just after we decided not to buy a new telly...

After a day and a half of discussion and research, we decided to get a new telly. A Samsung 23" widescreen LCD. I'm glad we did, i do feel bad about spending the money though.

It's probably because we are seeking to change our ways, adapt a more frugal lifestyle and find ourselves buying instead of (trying to) repair. After all, it is € 450 spent, where repair would be € 100. Or even less if i'd give it a go myself; i know what part failed, though i don't know if the cause of failure was the part itself or something else in the high-voltage circuit.

Maybe it's just a lack of confidence in my own capabilities? A lack of trust in my own judgement? Or just a simple matter of following the general accepted rule in western society of discard and replace?

We have fallen for the latter. Again.

It's a nice telly though. Make this a lesson for the future.

Got this TV from Amazon as it was a3100 more expensive revrywheee else. Its a great looking set, feels really high end. Actually getting a TV that worked properly was another deal though. The first one arrived with dead pixels, which Amazon, to their credit, agreed to replace quickly. The next one arrived in a smashed box (courtesy of CityLink) and had blemishes on the screen. Amazon sent out a new one, which (touch wood) has worked fine so far. Im using the TV as a PC monitor mainly, and once you set it up for this using the advanced menus on the TV then it really does look gorgeous. The quality is A*. I use it for desktop applications, gaming and movies, and it switches between them all with no sweat. Has a few nice features like on the fly preset image mode switching so that you can have a preset for movies and another for games etc, changes in a second and works lovely. I also have it set up with my PS3 and Xbox 360, both of which are fine on it, the colours are a little vibrant for my tastes, but its not unbearable. One issue I have noticed is a little bit of ghosting when dark objects move across a light background. A good example is fast scrolling text on a white webpage, or a dark object moving across a bright sky. This can make dark objects appear less sharp when the camera moves a little. Cons - * The input ports are on the back facing the edge, so if you dont have right-angled HDMI cables then you have cables looping round the side. * Screen is glossy, so reflects light and any other display sources you might have. Also picks up grime a bit easily. (The trade off is a more pleasing image when the environment is right.) * Can take a bit of fiddling with contradictary options to get the display just right'. * Some image ghosting with dark on light. Pros - * Looks fantastic. * When properly configured, phenomenal display in movies, games, PC use and general TV. * Very impressive sound for such a thin set. Nice things like changeable audio profiles are nice too. All in all, comes recommended from me, shame about the hassle getting a working set, but I suppose the fact that I got one in the end is a credit to Amazon customer service.

Review by mswain15 for Rating: I was looking for a cheap full HD TV and saw this, after reading the other reviews I decided to go ahead with the TV and wasn’t disappointed. Set up was extremely easy, the picture is fantastic, it looks nice, and the price can’t be beaten. The best feature for me on this TV was the USB input, I already have the WDTV device and has served me well but when I plugged my external hard rive into the USB it immediately recognised the device – the menus are in a nice easy format and it played every video I have , from mp4 & AVI to .MKV files (this was the biggest surprise to me that it could play the High Def file type, I have HD files and the video quality is astounding), You can resize the videos to fit the screen using the tools button and skip quickly through the file using the cursors on the remote (instead of using the fast forward and rewind, people who watch AVI’s know the frustration of losing your video postion and having to fast forward at a maximum of 16x to the correct place!).All in all, if you want a full HD TV at a low price then look no further, the only downside for me was that you can’t record via USB but apart from that I can’t fault it.
