Euro 2008
Another ten days and Euro 2008 kick off. Time to look ahead and do some predictions.
Group A: Czech Republic, Portugal, Switzerland, Turkey.
No real surprises in this group. Although Switzerland wins the first match against Turkey, neither team is strong enough to survive against Czech Republic, who gain the full nine points, and Portugal.
Group B: Austria, Croatia, Germany, Poland.
Germany being the strongest team wins the group with the full 9 points. Poland wins against the expected runner up Croatia, and continues to the next round.
Group C: France, Italy, Netherlands, Romania.
Four more or less equally strong countries in this group. All four having an equal chance of reaching the next round and an equal chance to getting send home. However, looking at the final group results, it seems the qualification 'group of death' doesn't do justice: France and Italy go on and going home are the Netherlands (bummer!) and Romania.
Group D: Greece, Russia, Spain, Sweden.
The strongest teams Spain and Greece do what's expected and continue to the next round, sending Russia and Sweden home.
Quarter-finals
| Czech Republic | - | Poland |
| Germany | - | Portugal |
| France | - | Greece |
| Spain | - | Italy |
Though Poland is much weaker as the Czech Republic, they do win the match and continue. Germany sends Portugal home. France underestimates Greece again (as they did in Euro 2004) and loose their match. Spain and Italy, a clash of titans, ends in a defeat for the current world champion.
Semi-finals
| Poland | - | Germany |
| Greece | - | Spain |
Poland finally meets its master and loses the match against Germany. Spain also reaches the final by beating Greece.
The final
| Germany | - | Spain |
Though unlikely (given their history in big tournaments), Spain wins and becomes the new European champion.
Let's see how wrong i am. Or beat myself up for not having put in a large bet if i turn out to be right after all.
